Tossal de la Cala

Situated on a 100 meter tall hill, the Tossal de La Cala site was unearthed in the 1940s by Father Belda and in 1965 by Professor M. Tarradell, dating the archeological remains found between the second and 1st centuries BC. Archeological excavations completed by the AU since 2013 uncover that it was a Roman settlement involved by the armies of Quinto Sertorio during the Sertorian Wars. The divider, the various rooms and the materials found, demonstrate the presence of Roman soldiers and affirm, beyond question, that the Tossal de la Cala was a post or 'castellum' requested to be worked by General Sertorio inside a fortress plan of the north coast of Alicante, presumably around the year 77 BC.
