Sant'Ambrogio Market

This market's private scale and superb fresh produce made it a top  choiceamong Florentines since 1873. The bustling outside section features enticing pyramids of wonderfully displayed fruits and vegetables of the season, with sellers similarly courteous whether you get one apple or twelve. The edibles are juxtaposed with a happy mishmash of constantly changing wares – from attire and shoes to household items, flowers, beads... Not actually a touristy spot, but rather useful for discovering things you may require or may have neglected to purchase. Step inside the covered inside (where you will be welcomed by an enormous mosaic Florentine lily on the floor) for an alluring sprawl of stands selling a wide range of meats and numerous varieties of fresh and matured cheeses, prosciuttos, salamis, breads, nectar, fresh and dried pastas, grains, beans, eggs, olives, spices, sauces, oils, fresh and salted fish, milk, yogurt, and espresso. Also inside you'll track down the famous Trattoria da Rocco, ideal for a first prologue to grandmother's Tuscan kitchen. It was – and still is – a "tavola calda", implying that the food is arranged early and served in stacking portions all during lunch, six days every week (Mon-Sat: 11am–2:30pm).
