Piazza Navona
2020-12-02With its showy fountains, colourful cast and baroque palazzi of street artists, Piazza Navona, tourists and hawkers is central Rome’s attraction. Built over the 1st-century Stadio di Domiziano, it was cleared over in the fifteenth century and for almost 300 years hosted the city's principle market. Its excellent highlight is Bernini's Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, a flashy wellspring including an Egyptian obelisk and muscular personifications of the rivers Nile, Ganges, Danube and Plate. In truth, Bernini had finished his wellspring two years before Borromini started take a shot at the church's veneer and the gesture simply showed that the source of the Nile was obscure at that point.
