Found in Florence under the Loggia dei Lanzi, Perseus is the popular statue with the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini. Cellini, probably the greatest goldsmith of the Renaissance, was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici to sculpt this work in 1545. The subject is Perseus, standing over the group of Medusa and holding the as of late executed top of the monster in one hand and his sword in the other. It is one of the most significant examples of Italian in piazza della Signoria and Mannerist sculpture. The bronze sculpture is brimming with details which make it remarkable: as indicated by folklore, the saint has winged sandals for speed, the wizardry pack to store the head and the protective cap of invisibility.
