Its seventeenth century campanile (bell tower) is Naples' tallest, and this notorious church is home to a famously deft crucifix. Presently hanging in a sanctuary underneath the church's primary curve, the cross supposedly evaded a cannonball terminated at the church in 1439 during the battle between Alfonso of Aragon and Robert of Anjou. Similarly miraculous is the thirteenth century Byzantine symbol of the Madonna della Bruna, held behind the primary special stepped area, and celebrated with fireworks every 16 July. In reality, the much-cherished Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine is shrouded in legend.
