In 1070, on its site there was at that point a church extremely sober, of Romanesque style, whose grave and the interior of the veneer still bear traces. It was reconstructed in the Gothic style somewhere in the range of 1250 and 1405. In 1593, Buontalenti made the extravagant veneer, with sculptures by Caccini, and revamped a monastery and presbytery in a sober style adjusted to the request for the monks of Vallombrosa. The chapels contain many interesting works, including frescoes by Lorenzo Monaco in the Bartolini house of prayer, and those by Ghirlandaio on the existence of St. Francis of Assisi.
